Ceit leads the way in industrial precision with new femtosecond laser acquistions.

02 | 12 | 2024

The technology centre has opened a new precision laser laboratory to boost innovation in industry.

Femtosecond laser technology is revolutionising the industrial outlook, becoming established as a key solution for production processes that require high precision and sustainability. These types of lasers offer unique advantages such as the capacity to undertake very high-resolution work without the need for auxiliary chemical elements, which makes them an environmentally friendly alternative. Furthermore, the technological maturing of these sources and their auxiliary equipment has enabled them to become increasingly accessible, thus expanding their use to sectors such as aerospace, the car industry, lighting and biomedicine.

Precision in the service of industry

Ceit has reinforced its technological capacity in this area via the incorporation of two new state-of-the-art pieces of equipment:

Firstly, Ceit has acquired Lasea LS-4 equipment – a laser system that combines femtosecond and nanosecond pulses with wavelengths of 1030 nm and 515 nm in a work area of up to 400 mm x 600 mm. With this new equipment, Ceit is providing both Basque and Spanish industry with the finest technology in terms of femtoseconds thus far developed in Europe, geared to the design and development of pioneering new robust production processes.

Additionally, it has also acquired the SatsumaX de 50W laser source – equipment that complements the range of technology offered by Ceit by fitting out an independent workbench that expands the possibilities for laser processing. Especially designed for cylindrical geometries and monitored processes with a definition of less than a micrometre, this high-power source enables new concepts in manufacture using laser to be explored.

With these acquisitions, which have been funded by the Basque Government AZPITEK programme, Ceit is boosting its capacities and paving the way for new possibilities in key sectors and activities such as frequency selective surfaces (FSS), plastic injection moulds, decorative and functional lighting and the functionalisation of implants and industrial processes in which very high-definition geometries need to be defined.

Commitment to industry

Ceit inaugurated this new laboratory on 16th November last with an event attended by both customers and strategic partners. Those in attendance were able to learn firsthand about the facilities and technological advances that Ceit has incorporated into its femtosecond laser equipment.

With this expansion, Ceit is renewing its commitment to the technological development of industry by providing state-of-the-art manufacturing solutions that combine precision, innovation and sustainability.
